Bootleg Brewing Company News

Bootleg LogoThe Bootleg Brewing Company is a microbrewery based at the Horse & Jockey pub on Chorlton Green, Chorlton-cum-Hardy. It brewed it\'s first ale on 25th September 2010 using a 4 barrel plant installed by Porter Brewing Co.

In 2013 the pub and brewery was purchased by Joseph Holt Ltd. Bootleg Brewery branded beers have become widely available across the Joseph Holt estate but it is believe much of this beer is brewed at Holt's brewery in Cheetham Hill

We are thrilled to announce our Green Hops Beer that was recently grown fresh from the rooftops of Horse & Jockey pub where our micro-brewery is based has been harvested and fermented to create a new autumn beer.

The beer is a single hopped pale ale and has been named Chorlton Green Hop paying homage to the way it’s been brewed. As most hops are dried before use, whereas our method has been to pick the hops, and use straight away. This unique ale uses fresh Centennial hops directly from the bine to maximise the beer’s aroma giving floral and lemony scents that derives from centennial hops, it is light in colour, refreshing and full of taste.

Chorlton Beer & Cider Festival have teamed up with Chorlton’s own Bootleg Brewing Co to offer a local home brewer the chance to have their own beer on sale at the festival and in selected Holt’s pubs across the area for Manchester Beer Week. The beer will be brewed in time for the Festival and Manchester Beer Week at the brewery at The Horse and Jockey Pub.

The winner of the Home Brew competition will brew their recipe on a commercial scale with Stef Occhi, Head Brewer for Bootleg. The winning beer will be racked into casks for Chorlton Beer Festival and sold through selected pubs in Manchester. You will name your own beer when you enter and the Bootleg Brewing Co will design a pump clip for the winner. On top of that, The Bootleg Brewing Co will also bottle some of your beer for you to take home.

Bootleg Brewery Brewster Erin Guy has left the Joseph Holt owned Bootleg Brewery.

It is not known if she will be replaced or whether all remaining production from the Horse & Jockey based brewery will be transferred to Joseph Holt's plant in Cheetham Hill where "Bootleg" branded beers like "Spin Doctor" lager are already produced.

Stefano Occhi or Stef as he prefers was been appointed head brewer of Bootleg Brewing in December 2016.

Stef who hails from Milan, Italy has a Masters in Brewing Science from Nottingham University and has been working with the Joseph Holt Head Brewer Phil Parkinson.

For more details see the full announcement on the Bootleg web site:-

With brewster Erin Guy going on maternity it is Jack who takes up the reigns at Bootleg this autumn.

The opening beers - Contraband and Lawless - will be rested for now while other styles are developed. The regular beers for the present will be Chorlton Pale Ale, USA IPA, with new beer Racketeer as a permanent. This last is a 4% copper coloured ale, with a smooth mouth feel. The hops come through late while initial tastes have a light caramel feel. The stronger USA IPA at 5.5% has been mellowed from the original, but remains a definite American style, with the addition of dry hops.

A lager is being produced in time for the next Joktober fest. At 4.4% it may also be bottled in the future. Future plans may include more beers being bottled.

Joktober fest kicks off on 27th September with live music and a terrace bar..

Bonfire Night will see the welcome return of Treacle Stout. Look out for the Winter Solstice events too.
