The 2016 Best Newcomer award went to the Craftsman in Altrincham.

The Best Newcomer award went to  The Craftsman which opened in December 2015 in a vacant unit on Stamford New Road (although the site had hosted a bar many years ago). Here six handpumps have plain pumpclips which just feature a number which refers to the large blackboard above the bar. On the presentation night there were beers from across the county - Brightside's Odin topped the list with the rest of the board featuring UBU from Warwick's Purity Brewery, IPA from XT brewery in Berkshire, Yeovil Ale's Yeo Ho Ho, Cross Bay's Sunshine and Kits Coty from London's Caveman brewery. Although the bar took a few months to find its feet, it has built a steady following in the town and was busy when CAMRA came to present their certificate. Trafford and Hulme’s pub of the season for autumn 2016 is the Prairie Schooner Taphouse in Urmston, the branch presented the award on Thursday the 20th. of October to the owner Rob and the team. A happy co-incidence was the celebration of the bars two year anniversary of their opening, and even better at the same time was a meet the brewer night, Colin and Sue from the Poynton brewery. An additional award still to be presented is the T&H Locale pub of the year, richly deserved, the four handpumps frequently featuring Pictish and Phoenix among others from the region. Camra discounts are available on production of a current members card also Wetherspoons vouchers are also valid.

Ostensibly a micro pub but actually a decent size, with two distinct seating areas either side of an island bar. Owner Robert MacRae opened the bar two years ago and was named the branch's best Newcomer in 2015. It's second anniversary will coincide with the presentation of the award.

One recent reviewer likened the premises to bringing a bit of Chorlton or Didsbury to Urmston. Can make of that what you will but it has certainly enhanced an area which is up and coming on the leisure front where along with numerous restaurants many real ale outlets have sprung up in recent years.

The premises were formerly a shop selling golfing tackle. The emphasis now is on fermented malt and fruit, consumed in a tranquil atmosphere (no TV or background music). No meals are available but nuts and nibbles are available. Lovers of whisky and wine will also find something of interest and small batch gin is a recent addition.
