Plans for the redevelopment of the Hare & Hounds are now available for comment on the Trafford Council Web site:-

and you can comment up until Friday 12th November.

Tim Field, the branch Pub Protection Officer notes:-

  • Timperley yet again faces the prospect of losing a local pub, following proposals for the demolition of the Pelican and also housing plans for the Timperley Taverners. This will leave many residents in the area finding it much more difficult to enjoy the benefits of a family friendly community space in which to meet.

  • There is again evidence of a worrying trend in that no attempt has been made by the owners to pro-actively market the pub as a going concern for at least 12 months. An essential requirement if local pubs are to have any chance of survival when pitched against high density housing proposals.

  • The community involvement statement accompanying the application is not supportive of the development and most comments either question or object to the proposals. The statement dismisses one local resident’s objection to the loss of the pub on the basis that the heritage statement (questionably) concludes that the pub has no architectural or historic merit. This fails to recognize the need to regard the pub not just as a building but as a community facility as required by national policy (para 93 of the National Planning Policy Framework).

Local CAMRA members, especially those living in the Timperley area, are encouraged to consider the application and submit an objection to the planning department (please follow the instructions that can be found on the above link). In addition, you may wish to contact your local councillors to ask them to support its retention as a pub. You can find details of yours here:-
