Beer Duty Campaign

Despite three years of duty cuts, people in Britain pay the second highest beer duty in all of Europe. The UK pays almost 40% of all EU beer duty despite only consuming 12% of beer across the EU.

Urge your MP to support pub goers and beer drinkers by asking for a further cut in beer duty.

Chorlton’s the Beech Inn has become the lastest pub to be added to Manchester City Council’s register of Assets Of Community value and the third success out of three applications for Trafford & Hulme CAMRA.

Outstanding applications submitted by CAMRA include the Sir Ralph Abercomby, The Vine (Sale) & the Old Market Tavern (Altrincham).

The Food AssemblyStretford’s Sip Club continues to come up with innovative ways to support its local community.

The latest is to become a hub for The Food Assembly – a network which connects local people to buy fresh food directly from local farmers and foodmakers. Orders are placed and paid for online at thefoodassembly.com and then The Sip Club welcomes the producers to their “hive” every Thursday evening for people to collect their orders. It’s a farm shop. In a pub. Brilliant!

The Food Assembly joins the Kids Clothes Swap, creatives meet up, watercolour painting club, kids drama workshops, Sip One Purl One knitting club and many more regular activities at the Barton Road venue. It’s like a community centre. In a Pub!

Owner Heather Garlick has even found time to expand her beer range with the addition of new bottles from First Chop Brewing Arm, Beer Nouveau, Blackjack Beers and cans from Chorlton Brewing alongside existing bottles from Runaway and Brightside breweries and the two ever changing cask beers.

CAMRA members can now get a discount in cask ales at Urmston’s Prairie Schooner Tap House. The Flixton Road micro-pub is offering members 20p a pint off their four cask ales. Members can also use their JD Wetherspoon vouchers in the pub to get the same 50p off that they can get in Wetherspoon pubs. Having just celebrated their first birthday, the Prairie Schooner have overhauled their bar set up, installing four handpumps (beers were previously served by gravity). They have also installed a new “cellar” behind the bar to replace their previous in-cask cooling system. An ingenious construction of welded steel and plastic, the casks are hoisted onto pull out draws which then retract into the wall. Magnetic covers form a sealed cooled box to create cellar conditions. The new construction can accommodate 8 casks at a time and means cask beer availability and quality is much improved.

Pub company Stonegate have been playing musical bars with their outlets in Sale. The former Waterside has now been rebranded as a Slug & Lettuce, while the former Slug & Lettuce is now the Block & Gasket. The latter has four handpumps on the bar – an increase of two from its predecessor on the site.
