News from pubs across the branch area.
Chorlton’s the Beech Inn has become the lastest pub to be added to Manchester City Council’s register of Assets Of Community value and the third success out of three applications for Trafford & Hulme CAMRA.
Outstanding applications submitted by CAMRA include the Sir Ralph Abercomby, The Vine (Sale) & the Old Market Tavern (Altrincham).
CAMRA members can now get a discount in cask ales at Urmston’s Prairie Schooner Tap House. The Flixton Road micro-pub is offering members 20p a pint off their four cask ales. Members can also use their JD Wetherspoon vouchers in the pub to get the same 50p off that they can get in Wetherspoon pubs. Having just celebrated their first birthday, the Prairie Schooner have overhauled their bar set up, installing four handpumps (beers were previously served by gravity). They have also installed a new “cellar” behind the bar to replace their previous in-cask cooling system. An ingenious construction of welded steel and plastic, the casks are hoisted onto pull out draws which then retract into the wall. Magnetic covers form a sealed cooled box to create cellar conditions. The new construction can accommodate 8 casks at a time and means cask beer availability and quality is much improved.
Pub company Stonegate have been playing musical bars with their outlets in Sale. The former Waterside has now been rebranded as a Slug & Lettuce, while the former Slug & Lettuce is now the Block & Gasket. The latter has four handpumps on the bar – an increase of two from its predecessor on the site.
October saw the end of an era at Chorlton’s The Bar when manager Chris Henry departed after many years at The Bar (and its sister bar The Knott).
Chris was such a tireless worker that he would often be seen behind the bar seven days a week, regularly from early opening to closing time.
Chris has a great passion for beer regularly greeting beer loving regulars with a tasting glass of the latest special beer he was proud to have got on the bar (whether it be in cask or keg format.
While he has left one Manchester beer institution behind, he is already behind the bar at another in his new role as manager of The Marble Arch.
Altrincham is to get a new bar.The branch was recently contacted by Nick Scott to tell us abut The Craftsman.
The bar is being opened by Nick & his stepfather Colin with the plan to sell “craft beer & fine wine”. The bar will be 41 Stamford New Road... between the Station & Goose Green.
They tell us they plan to feature a great selection of cask & keg beers in a venue which is aimed at those who appreciate good beer in good company and in relaxed, comfortable, safe & welcoming surroundings. We wish them well & will look forward to calling in when they open.
Trafford & Hulme CAMRA are pleased to report that Manchester City Council has added The Bowling Green, Brookburn Road, Chorlton to it's register of Assets of Community Value following an application by the Branch.
Chorlton has very many pubs and bars, but the granting of this application prooves that it is the very unique properties of each pub which matter. The Bowling Green very much serves its local community, whether it be for a good value wholesome meal, the use of their function room for meetings, parties and celebrations or the regular gathering of the community in the act of worship of Gaelic Football.
With the granting of ACV status, should the pubs owners put the building up for sale, the local community will have six weeks to decide whether they are interested in buying it followed by six months to raise funds. More significantly, the status also brings additional protection in planning law meaning any change of use from being a pub will require a full planning application. This will help prevent the pub going the same way as The Feathers (now Tescos) and The Southern Hotel (now a restaurant).
Manchester Council is currently considering another application to add the nearby Beech Inn to the ACV register while Trafford Council has been asked to consider Altrincham's Old Market Tavern as an community asset.
